Guide to UK Faster Payments (FPS), CHAPS and Bacs

The UK runs three domestic rails side by side, and which one your money rides explains everything about when it lands: Faster Payments (seconds, 24/7), CHAPS (same business day, high value), and Bacs (a fixed three-working-day cycle that powers most UK salaries and direct debits).

Faster Payments: the everyday rail

Since 2008, FPS has handled everyday UK bank transfers. Most payments arrive in seconds; the scheme's official promise is "within two hours", a buffer banks use when a payment trips extra fraud checks: new payee, unusual amount, risky pattern. It runs 24/7/365, including bank holidays.

  • Scheme limit: £1 million per payment, but banks set their own, often £25,000–£100,000 for personal accounts.
  • Confirmation of Payee: the name-check step at sending time; a mismatch warning is the most common reason people pause (and delay) their own payment.

CHAPS: same-day certainty for big money

CHAPS is the Bank of England's high-value rail: house purchases, large business payments. There's no upper limit, and payments submitted before your bank's cutoff (typically around 5 PM, earlier in branches) settle the same business day, usually within an hour or two. It runs Monday–Friday only, closed on UK bank holidays, and banks charge a fixed fee (commonly £15–£35).

Bacs: the three-day clock

Bacs Direct Credit and Direct Debit run on a rigid cycle that hasn't changed in decades:

DayWhat happens
Day 1 (working day)File submitted to Bacs by ~10:30 PM
Day 2Processing day; nothing visible happens
Day 3Funds credited/debited, typically by the start of the banking day

Weekends and bank holidays don't count. A Bacs payment submitted Thursday lands Monday; submitted Friday, it lands Tuesday. If your salary arrives "a day late," a bank holiday in the cycle is almost always why.

Which rail did my money take?

  • Online/app transfer between UK accounts → almost certainly FPS.
  • Solicitor completing a house purchase → CHAPS.
  • Salary, pension, HMRC refund, direct debit → Bacs.
  • From abroad → SWIFT, then the last leg lands via FPS or CHAPS.
Waiting on a UK payment? FPS, CHAPS and Bacs are all on the calculator, with UK bank holidays computed automatically.
